The core

A unification can cost nothing and explain everything. On top, drawn solid: electricity and magnetism resolve into one field — the proven precedent, where the cost was only that we stopped counting it as two. Below, drawn as a lighter dashed echo of exactly the same shape: information and entropy resolve into one field — the same bet placed again, the strongest working interpretation, not yet proven.

There's one idea here. The next few pages are that idea, start to finish — read just those and you have the whole thing. Everything after is for if you want to see how far it goes.

And one honest note, said once so I don't have to keep saying it: this is the strongest version of the idea I have, not a finished proof. A working reading I'd put my name on.

For a long time, For a long time electricity and magnetism were two subjects; then Maxwell showed they were one electromagnetic field seen from two sides — a true paradigm shift, not a relabeling: it predicted invisible waves that turned out to be radio, and fed straight into relativity. That's the kind of unification Infotropy is reaching for — held as the bet, not claimed as the proof. were two subjects. Two sets of experiments, two names, two intuitions about what was going on. Then it turned out they were one thing — a single field — seen from two sides. Nothing in the world changed that day. No new force, no new particle, nothing added to the universe. The unification cost nothing and explained everything; they were never two things to begin with. What changed is that we stopped counting it as two.

The candidate unification of information and entropy — the working interpretation that the two are one process read from opposite ends, the way electricity and magnetism turned out to be one field. Strongly supported, not proven; run with because it keeps working. is the bet that information and entropy are like that.

It began as Clausius's bookkeeping for the heat a process throws away and can't reuse; Boltzmann later read it as the count of micro-arrangements hidden inside the bulk state, and Shannon as the surprise in a message — one word, three fields, all tracking what gets spent. is the accountant of what gets spent: heat spreading out, order draining away, the usable difference in a thing leaking off into its surroundings. In its exact sense this is Shannon's — resolved uncertainty, what a channel carries — not the everyday 'meaning' sense. The walk reads it as the record face of the very event entropy bills: the structure that survives and goes on to shape what's next. is the record of what got built and stayed — the structure that survives the process and goes on to shape whatever happens next. Two ledgers, kept by two different fields.

Read one event down both at once. A log burns in a fireplace. Entropy's accountant books the spending: the packed-up energy in the wood disperses into heat and light and smoke, the usable difference leaking off into the room, and none of it coming back. The record side books the same fire differently — the ash and char left in their particular pattern, the soot pulled up the flue, the warmth that put someone to sleep an hour early, every downstream thing the burning went on to touch. One fire. Two sets of books. I think they're reading the same event from opposite ends.

That's the thesis, and I'll hold it with confidence for the rest of this — but only after telling you straight where it stands. It isn't proven. I'm not going to pretend it is, and I'm not going to staple an apology to every sentence either. It's the best reading I've found of something a lot of separate fields keep half-describing from their own corners.

So where does this thing actually live? Because it isn't sitting in any one equation.
